Background of the Study
Fish farming has emerged as a promising livelihood in Bonny, where traditional fishing practices are increasingly complemented by aquaculture. The development of fish farming contributes to food security, provides a sustainable source of protein, and generates income for rural households (Ibrahim, 2023). Modern aquaculture techniques have enhanced production efficiency and marketability, thereby transforming local economies (Emeka, 2024). Despite these advantages, fish farming in Bonny faces challenges such as limited access to quality feed, environmental concerns, and inadequate technical support (Chukwu, 2025). The study explores how fish farming influences rural livelihoods by analyzing income diversification, employment opportunities, and community development. By examining both the benefits and challenges of fish farming, the research aims to provide recommendations for optimizing aquaculture practices to improve rural economic well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Fish farming in Bonny, though promising, is challenged by limited technical support, poor-quality inputs, and environmental concerns that hinder its full potential (Ibrahim, 2023). These challenges restrict production efficiency and reduce the income benefits for rural households (Emeka, 2024). The lack of effective extension services and market access further exacerbates these problems, undermining the contribution of fish farming to rural livelihoods. This study seeks to investigate these challenges and propose measures that can enhance the positive economic impacts of fish farming in Bonny (Chukwu, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the contribution of fish farming to rural livelihoods.
To identify challenges facing the aquaculture industry in Bonny.
To recommend strategies for improving fish farming practices and market access.
Research Questions:
What is the economic impact of fish farming on rural households?
What challenges hinder the growth of fish farming in Bonny?
What strategies can enhance the productivity and profitability of fish farming?
Research Hypotheses:
H₁: Fish farming significantly improves rural livelihoods in Bonny.
H₂: Technical and environmental challenges negatively affect fish farming productivity.
H₃: Enhanced support services can improve the economic outcomes of fish farming.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the role of fish farming in improving rural livelihoods in Bonny. The findings will assist stakeholders, including policymakers and extension services, in developing targeted interventions to address challenges and enhance the sustainability of aquaculture practices. It contributes to rural development and food security by promoting effective fish farming practices (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the effect of fish farming on rural livelihoods in Bonny Local Government Area, focusing on local aquaculture practices and their economic implications without extending to other regions.
Definitions of Terms:
Fish Farming: The practice of breeding and rearing fish in controlled environments for commercial purposes.
Rural Livelihoods: The means of securing food, income, and shelter in rural areas.
Aquaculture: The cultivation of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions.
